Typeface Design
FrozenLake is a low-contrast text typeface designed for Shuang Xuetao’s magical realism novel Rouge Street. Rouge Street depicts people in the 90s who experienced post-industrial issues in the Dongbei region of China such as unemployment and education policy changes. FrozenLake is inspired by a small town always locked in winter and the geometric architectural style that was influenced by the Soviet Union since the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The inner counters and the letter structures are geometric, but contours are rounded and soft to mimic snow-covered roofs.
